Westdeutsches Tumorzentrum • Universitätsklinikum Essen • Direktor: Prof. Dr. med. M. Schuler

Dear patient, dear visitor!

Welcome to the Department of Medicine (Cancer Research) of the West German Cancer Center at the University Hospital Essen. This Webpage is intended to provide you with general information on our Department as well as with contact addresses for appointments and referrals.

For several decades our Department has been devoted to the medical treatment of patients suffering from malignant diseases. In addition to cytotoxic chemotherapy, which still is a mainstay of cancer therapy, new treatment modalities, such as monoclonal antibodies and tumor growth inhibitors, have entered clinical practice. Physicians from our Department have prominently contributed to the clinical development of these new agents, which have literally changed the "face" of modern cancer therapy. Moreover, supportive therapies and optimized combinations of anticancer drugs or radiation have significantly improved the efficacy and tolerability of these treatments. It is our goal to offer our patients optimal and highly innovative treatment options, which are specifically tailored to their individual disease and personal needs.

This is achieved by close collaboration of all physicians involved in the care of our patients at the West German Cancer Center. Individual treatment strategies are developed in specialized "Tumor Boards" with participation of experienced Radiation Oncologists, Oncological Surgeons, Diagnostic Radiologists and Histopathologists. In doing so, we can offer our patients the most advanced medical expertise of the University Hospital Essen.

You are highly welcome to contact us directly or to make an appointent at our outpatient center (Poliklinik).

Sincerely,

Martin Schuler, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Director, Department of Medicine (Cancer Research)
